Chapter Thirteen
Gabriel
Sleep was a long time coming, too much in my head, too many thoughts in my brain, too many puzzles. The hopeful side of me expected the video would prove that Hillesden would remain the suspect, but the more realistic part of me already knew he was innocent. He was obsessed with Bigfoot, but he wasnât a killerâat least, that was what my gut told me. By the time I fell asleep, Iâd come to terms with losing Hillesden from the board, and made a little sense of the questions Iâd ask the campers whoâd had the run-in with Mikeâassuming they were still at the Applecross camping area. I knew what Iâd be searching for in the morning, all apart from that insistent nagging fact about the blue chicken, which made absolutely no sense at all.
The chicken followed me into my nightmares, the body, the X carved into Mikeâs chest, and somehow in my sleep I was seeing monsters and running from them and shouting for help. When the nightmares twisted to the things Iâd seen in LA I woke drenched in sweat, blinking in the darkness, my breathing harsh, and when I checked the time it was four a.m., and less than an hour away from first light. I laid back, but even the exercises I could use to still my thoughts couldnât erase the craziness of the nightmares.
Dawn, we meet again.
I showered, made coffee, and was out of the house as the sun rose, and heading for the office. It was Sunday, but with a murder investigation going on, there was no such thing as a day off. To his credit, Devin was there waiting, a thermos under his arm, looking as if he had all the energy in the world. I admired the twenty-three-year-oldâs passion for the job and couldnât help but wonder why Iâd let so many things happen to me that made me feel old at thirty-four.
âMorning, sir! I have more coffee.â He waved the thermos at me and filled my travel mug without being asked. When heâd done his as well, he settled back in his seat, carding his fingers through his blond curls and giving me a smile.
âThank you.â
âSo I have more news, on Jimmy Bowie, from Abby. She didnât think much of it before because we were focusing on the video, but she wanted to point out that Jimmy doesnât have much love for the rangers hereâall tied up in the tribal dispute, I imagine? She caught him and another guy vandalizing the station last summer, scrawling slogans about land-stealing and such. His grandfather Charlie got him off with a promise of working around the place. Abby said he did good work when he was there, but she wanted you to be aware he had a grievance.â
âJimmy Bowie. Okay.â Tiber had told me he was a suspect. Now I learn heâd been caught vandalizing the ranger station? I felt a stab of excitement.
âYep.â
âCan you add him to the board andââ
âAlready done.â
âWhen?â
âI got here early.
